JURIS UTĀNS FEBRUARY 19 - MARCH 31, 2025
OPENING FEBRUARY 19, 2025 AT 14:00

Art historian Diāna Barčevska writes about the work of Juris Utāns: “The task of Juris Utāns’s art has always been to knock his contemporaries out of their comfort zone.” This resonates strongly with today’s realities. The occupation of Crimea in 2014 had a profound impact on Juris Utāns, and he created a series of works depicting this occupation and its subsequent consequences. A new concept emerged in the world — hybrid warfare and its various manifestations in Latvia, along our national borders, and throughout Europe. This was followed by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The artist was right. His works contain a prophetic message that we initially perceived as fantasy. Although Juris Utāns’s works unsettle the viewer and push them out of their comfort zone, they serve as a warning—to remain vigilant, to fight for our values, and to protect what belongs to us. For the fourth year already, Russia has been brutally continuing a full-scale war in Ukraine. Latvian society actively donates and selflessly engages in providing assistance to war-torn Ukraine. Public organizations play a crucial role in this support—Agendum (Twitter Convoy), Tavi draugi, Uzņēmēji mieram, Ganta Fonds, and others.
Within the context of the exhibition, we wish to introduce opportunities to become involved in this volunteer movement and to make your own contribution toward a common goal—helping Ukraine to win.
Live auction: February 14 at 12:00 PM.

"Light Constructions" Baiba Ābelīte - solo exhibition

About the exhibition
The exhibition “Light Constructions” focuses on the question of how light can construct space. The paintings become objects that change with the movement of the viewer – they “breathe” with the environment, reflect the lighting of the room, and sometimes it seems that the light really emanates from inside the work. The series of works are created by visually pure, constructive compositional principles, which bring them closer to the aesthetics of modernist architecture, yet they also retain a poetic dimension – the pulsation of light, rhythm and a delicate emotional balance between the cold material and the living gesture of painting. These works are both paintings and installations, as their presence in the space also affects the viewer’s own movement and sense of vision. Ābelīte’s approach reflects the expansion of the boundaries of painting – she combines traditional techniques with the aesthetics of industrial materials.
