In 2001, the Museum of Foreign Art will open an exhibition "Signs of the Century" by the artist Erro, whose real name is Gudmundur Gudmundsson. Erro was born in 1932 in Iceland. In 1936, his mother married a farmer from a remote farm, where the future artist spent his childhood. Lonely travelers often sought shelter in their home. The boy began to get to know people and their worldviews from their stories, as well as from books. In the mid-1940s, the boy's desire and ability to draw and paint began to manifest. This was also facilitated by the catalog of the Museum of Modern Art in New York that accidentally fell into his hands. At the age of 14, Erro created his work "War", which is still in the artist's studio today. In parallel with his studies at school, he attended evening drawing courses, in 1949 he entered the Reykjavik Art School, but in 1951, having received an art teacher's diploma, he began studying at the Oslo Academy. Erro traveled a lot. In 1953 he went to Spain, then to Germany, France, and Italy. In 1958, Erro settled in Paris, but in 1962 he got to know New York better, searching the streets for "raw materials" for his works of art. A new turning point in Erro's work was the work "Foodscape", which was created from products purchased in a New York supermarket. Erro currently lives alternately in Paris, Formentera, and Thailand.
