The photo series “Women and Water” was created in 2010. The works were originally produced using traditional black-and-white photographic techniques, employing a large-format camera with 4×5 inch sheet film (image area 6×9 cm). The series is inspired by the art of Edgar Degas, where the woman is one of the central figures — ballerinas, milliners, and women bathing. The photographs similarly explore the relationship between light, movement, and form, creating an intimate and subdued atmosphere.

Born in Riga, Latvia (1988), Elizabete Rancāne graduated from the Edinburgh College of Art (now the University of Edinburgh) in 2013 with a Bachelor’s degree in Photography with Honours. Her education also includes photography studies at the Beaux-Arts de Paris and the Tartu Art College in Estonia. In her photographic practice, Elizabete specialises in portraiture and the nude genre, exploring themes of identity, personality, and the aesthetics of the human body. As a photographer, Elizabete aims to reveal beauty in the everyday and create works rich in subtle emotional nuance.
