She was encouraged to pursue fashion photography in the late 1970s by her colleague Jānis Kreicbergs, when they were both working at the editorial office of the magazine Rīgas Modes. Kreicbergs helped Sūna master the profession and allowed her to use his workplace photographic laboratory. Ilga Sūna gained wide recognition through her fashion-themed exhibitions, including “Close-Up Behind the Scenes” (1979) and “Woman and Fashion” (1984). In 1979, she joined the Fotoklubs Rīga. In the late 1980s, Ilga Sūna began a second direction in her artistic practice, focusing on landscape photography.
