"Light Constructions" Baiba Ābelīte - solo exhibition
About the exhibition
The exhibition “Light Constructions” focuses on the question of how light can construct space. The paintings become objects that change with the movement of the viewer – they “breathe” with the environment, reflect the lighting of the room, and sometimes it seems that the light really emanates from inside the work. The series of works are created by visually pure, constructive compositional principles, which bring them closer to the aesthetics of modernist architecture, yet they also retain a poetic dimension – the pulsation of light, rhythm and a delicate emotional balance between the cold material and the living gesture of painting. These works are both paintings and installations, as their presence in the space also affects the viewer’s own movement and sense of vision. Ābelīte’s approach reflects the expansion of the boundaries of painting – she combines traditional techniques with the aesthetics of industrial materials.
