In the portrait, Hanele (Elvīra Irmgarde Matuze) is depicted — Jānis Ferdinands Tīdemanis’ first wife (1922–1937) and the main protagonist in the artist’s portraiture.

Kārlis Upītis (1910–1989), a mathematics teacher at the Riga State Secondary School (RVĢ), met Hanele in the summer of 1937 in Irlava. In 1937, Tīdemanis and Hanele divorced. In 1938, K. Upītis married Hanele. The Upītis family preserved a significant collection of works by the painter Jānis Tīdemanis.

Voldemārs Pauzers (1907–1957). The painter Konrāds Ubāns, recognizing Pauzers’ abilities, encouraged him to focus on the ornamentation of picture frames and on woodcarving. Around 1933, Pauzers produced his first frame designs based on examples provided by K. Ubāns. In the mid-1930s he moved to Riga, where he rapidly developed his mastery as a woodcarver and his artistic freedom. Pauzers’ works are characterized by a harmony between the carving, the toning, and the paintings themselves. His most notable body of work shown together was the set of frames for the Irlava Art Museum collection (23 frames, 1943). Among Pauzers’ clients were all the best-known artists of the 1930s–1950s.
