Arnolds Nulītis (1896–1988) entered the Latvian State Academy of Arts in 1921, from which he graduated in 1929, finishing the figurative painting workshop of Prof. Roberts Tilbergs. In the early 1930s, he worked in the Mūksala artists' studio under Voldemārs Tone and was one of the founders of the Mūksala Artists' Association. During this time, his work was dominated by portraits and landscapes in the tradition of academic realism, with a strong influence of old master painting. A significant turning point occurred after World War II in Germany, where Nulītis became acquainted with the theory of contemporary art and turned to abstraction for the first time. After moving to Canada in 1951, his interest in abstract painting intensified, and already at his first solo exhibition in Toronto in 1956, more than half of the works were abstract or semi-abstract. Nulītis's abstract painting grew organically from a realistic view of nature and was based on the foundations of academic education. His art is characterized by meticulous work, stylistic diversity and continuous search. Painting until the end of his life, Arnolds Nulītis left an image in the history of Latvian art as a disciplined, humane and spiritually independent artist.
