."N. Stūris drew already in his school years, but art became a real passion for him during his service. Even before serving in the army, N. Stūris met and became friends with the barefoot artist Voldemārs Irbe from Riga and, fascinated, followed him, watched and studied. He depicted this meeting with V. Irbe in his most significant painting, "Artist Voldemārs Irbe in his Studios in the 20th Century." In the 1930s” (1985, private collection). N. Stūris did not study art at any educational institution, but among his subordinates in the Latvian army unit he commanded were artists Leonīds Āriņš, Eduards Masaļskis and Oļģerts Saldavs, who willingly helped him and shared their knowledge and skills. N. Stūris learned the basics of oil painting under the guidance of E. Masaļskis. N. Stūris is one of the most notable painters of Latvian naive art, whose painting is a search for belonging to the world. Overall, N. Stūris's works provide a valuable insight into the history of Latvia and its people. His paintings depict themes of morality, patriotism, family love and healthy irony. The paintings reflect his diverse artistic interests and abilities, the fulfillment of the end of his life with meaningful creative work. The works created in the spirit of naive primitivism create their own sovereign world, in which there is both light irony about the experienced and "What I saw, both joy and great love for life, and rage, and pain and tenderness."
