Art historian Diāna Barčevska writes about the work of Juris Utāns: “The task of Juris Utāns’s art has always been to knock his contemporaries out of their comfort zone.” This resonates strongly with today’s realities. The occupation of Crimea in 2014 had a profound impact on Juris Utāns, and he created a series of works depicting this occupation and its subsequent consequences. A new concept emerged in the world — hybrid warfare and its various manifestations in Latvia, along our national borders, and throughout Europe. This was followed by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The artist was right. His works contain a prophetic message that we initially perceived as fantasy. Although Juris Utāns’s works unsettle the viewer and push them out of their comfort zone, they serve as a warning—to remain vigilant, to fight for our values, and to protect what belongs to us.
