“Osvalds Rožkalns was also a native of Vidzeme—born in Smiltene—and a large part of his creative life was connected with the theatre: working as a set decorator at the Latvian Opera (1931–1940), drawing in the Putlos and Zedelgem prisoner-of-war camps (1944–1945), creating independent costumes for performances at the Würzburg DP camp (1946–1951), and later serving as a theatre artist at the Würzburg Theatre (Mainfranken Theater Würzburg, 1962–1972).His artistic language is rich and diverse. It consists of dialogues with the past and the present, with theatre, stage characters, and great masters—Kazaks, El Greco, Vermeer, Picasso, and many others—whom the artist studied, copied, and used as sources of inspiration for independent works. This process was very important to him, as during his lifetime he was unable to study at art schools or at the Latvian Academy of Art. One can only admire the level of mastery he achieved and the full development of his personality, attained through persistent daily work.”/From press materials related to the publication of the book The Third Return about the artist Osvalds Rožkalns by Ingrīda Burāne and Māris Brancis/
