Juris Dimiters is a Latvian scenographer, painter, and poster artist. His mother is the painter Džemma Skulme, and his father is the actor Artūrs Dimiters. In 1973, he graduated from the Painting Department of the Latvian Academy of Art. Juris Dimiters can be regarded as one of the most original authors working in a surrealist stylistic manner, distinguished by a unique range of imagery and a distinctive painting technique. The artist’s work is characterized by a focus on thematic cycles, in which everyday household objects, fruits, and their surreal combinations—items frequently used in daily life—are painted with subtlety and precision. These staged compositions are essentially Juris Dimiters’s figurative commentaries on the relationships between the individual, society, and power, as well as on human relationships—especially between men and women. The artist’s works are held in the collections of the Latvian National Museum of Art, the future Latvian Museum of Contemporary Art, the Latvian Artists’ Union Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the Ludwig Museum of Modern Art in Cologne, the Kremona Foundation in Maryland, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Nancy & Norton Dodge Collection, the Zimmerli Art Museum in New Brunswick, as well as in private collections in Latvia, the United States, Russia, Germany, Sweden, and other countries.
